HIBER NATION is a design fiction project exploring the Gaian paradigm based on the research framework 'Co-Emerging Futures' devised by Reon Brand for Philips Design.

“The ideal of Gaia is to focus human activity towards restoring the natural dynamic balance of ecosystems that nourish all life on earth.”
Hiber nation describes a scenario in which societies adopt a yearly hibernation ritual to reduce their impact on ecosystem. A process called “therapeutic hypothermia” allows people to sleep for up to three months at a time by lowering the body temperature and slowing down the metabolism. Specially designed contra- and proceptives allow women to give birth right after waking up from hibernation. As a consequence most people are born on the same day.
