Re Factory
Service design

This project was part of the ‘Nice 2035’ urban planning vision of Shanghai, at Tongji university in China. The brief was to think about services and systems to make Siping road a destination experience with the given theme of recycling. Using a landmark to promote sustainable lifestyles in the street was the strategy of our group.
How can we use waste as a raw material for education and a tool to bring community and student together ?
We proposed a concept recycling hub that would bring students and community together to learn STEM by using their own house hold waste as a raw material. The hub is flexible and hosted in the abondened factory located in the first crossroad of the street. Re Factory will showcase what could be an urban modern factory.

Re-factory identity is both expressed in the space and the products produced. Making it recognizable so it becomes visually identified as a hub. The concept can be recallable, re adaptable in different not used locations. We tried to create transparency of the recycling process by opening the facade to make it visible for people passing by. We choose to enhance the rustic aesthetic of the old factory to express the short-term aspect.
